Sand Ceremony

(Bride) and (Groom), as you have just sealed your relationship by the giving and receiving of rings and the exchange of a kiss, you have committed here at the setting of the sun to share the next day’s sunrise, and all of your days with each other.

Today, right here, right now, this journey begins.

I would ask you both to reach down and take a handful of sand from beneath where you stand and hold it forth.

May this sand represent each of you as individuals; sand that originates at this one very special place on the earth where your journey of marriage begins. By taking this sand and pouring half of it into this bowl, you combine your journeys into one, mixing part of yourself with the other.

Just as these grains of sand can never be separated and returned again to this beach in their same exact order, so will your journey through life never be the same. Just as your hands hold a remainder of sand, so will your individual spirits and the responsibility for happiness in life remain your own.

As Kahlil Gibran tells us,

"If one must know the ebb of your tide, let him know its flood also. For what is your friend that you should seek him with hours to kill. Seek him always with hours to live, for it is his to fill your need but not your emptiness. For in the dew of little things, the heart finds it’s morning, and is refreshed."
