Why Be Married on a Beach? I mean, really! Why would anyone
want to get married on a beach anyway? You'd have to go barefoot and miss the
chance to wear those tight and expensive dressy shoes, and maybe have to wear
those funny "just married" flip-flops (the ones that leave the words Just
Married in the sand)...and you'll have all that beach sand oozing between your
toes!
The guys would miss the chance to wear that fancy tuxedo, and probably wear something like shorts and a colorful shirt, or worse... bathing trunks and a billowy white shirt. You might have to skip that big ole heavy (but obligatory) wedding gown and wear a beachie sun dress, or maybe even a grass skirt! You might do something unpredictable to upset your mom, like wearing a colorful sarong with a bathing suit underneath and then go jump into the sea after the officiant pronounces you to be husband and wife, but that probably isn't as much fun as having a traditional and formal recessional afterwards. (yep) And then there is that annoying sound of the waves and them dang sea-gulls flying overhead. Who wants to hear that stuff during your wedding ceremony? There will be those pesky sea breezes to muss up your hair, and all that wedding decoration planning that you won't get to do. (And spend money on...) Sigh. So why get married on a beach?
Because a marriage is like a beach! Like a marriage, a day on the
beach is like a ride on a wild thing. The ground that you assumed was so firm
shifts and hisses, the boundaries grow and recede. The tides yearn, the moon
pulls, and very air shifts us around. With a both a beach and a good marriage,
each new day starts out washed, swept, utterly different than the day before.
Where else in the world do we get the chance to step out into so much renewal?
Where else do we keep getting second chances with ourselves? Sometimes life in a marriage seems like a hurricane, hurrying us and swirling us along a little too fast. But your marriage (like the beach) is a fixed point, an eye in the hurricane. (But the beach’s eye is a lazy eye, probably closed, taking a nap in the sun, letting life just sink in. A beach never lets us forget the great value of just trusting and letting go.) So a marriage is like a beach, a letting go, a plunge into the deep. No one need the currents fear, nor hesitate to leap... ~ You may your spirits keep ~ More is gained by giving up and less by taking in. Remember that to dwell in joy, you must make room within" That's why! Beach Wedding Blessing Float. Laugh like a gull. Make a splash. Listen in on shells. Stretch. Run with the waves. Carry a bucket. Ride rusty bikes. Boogie. Ebb and flow with the tides. Go with the wind. Cultivate quiet. Tune your senses. Walk tender. Cherish living things. Dance on edges. Build castles and leave them for the moon to find. Cross bridges. Discover treasure. Be transported. Give thanks. Amen!
