Wilmington Weddings.....The Historic Riverfront Town of Wilmington

(or see the Beaches around Wilmington)

Rich in history and folklore, the Cape Fear Coast's enchanted shores and waterways echo with voices from the past and the present. Marvel over restored homes and landmark buildings, and visit with attractions from the river to the sea.

Boasting one of the state's largest historic districts listed in the National Register of Historic Places, a number of Victorian, Georgian, Italianate and antebellum-style homes, buildings and churches have been restored to their original splendor.

Downtown Wilmington offers eclectic shopping, vibrant nightlife, theatrical productions, coffeehouses and outstanding restaurants. Inland you'll find excellent golf courses, parks, amusements, plantations and gardens. Visitors can enjoy more than 45 attractions, guided tours and a variety of activities. Traditional festivals such as the N.C. Azalea festival and Riverfest, among others, celebrates the areas history and culture. Overnight accommodations range from riverfront inns to quaint B&B's.

Historical and Cultural Attractions

Walk the decks of the restored WWII battleship North Carolina. A self-guided tour includes decks, with crew quarters and engine rooms. Also featured are exhibits and a museum. You can rent the battleship or the park next to the pier for a wedding! Go to their website for contact information. www.battleshipnc.com

The Cape Fear Museum is the state's oldest history museum, est. in 1898 during the Confederacy. If at all possible, make this your first stop upon arriving in the area; it'll give you background for the sites that you might be seeing. This is a lovingly developed museum that puts other, larger ones to shame with the sheer force of it's desire to interpret for visitors. Be sure to catch the scale model of the Wilmington waterfront, circa 1862, as well as the diorama of the battles for Fort Fischer. http://www.capefearmuseum.com/

Greenfield Gardens constitutes a true "People's Park."  The five-fingered lake, bordered by stately moss-draped cypress, attracts many visitors in all seasons, but the gardens reach their peak beauty in the early spring when millions of azaleas blanket the park with colorful hues.  Each spring the gardens are viewed by thousands of visitors as the city stages its annual Azalea Festival.

All of this natural beauty is mirrored by the reflective waters of the 150-acre lake.  While the azalea is the reigning beauty of this park, native trees and shrubs grow in profusion; colorful camellias, towering live oaks, magnolias, redbud, crepe myrtle and dogwood along with thousands of jonquils, daffodils, tulips and seasonal landscaped areas.

Greenfield Gardens has achieved its far-reaching name during the past decade through the continual beautification efforts of the Parks Division of the City of Wilmington.  With it's yearly temperature of 65 degrees, lots of sunshine, a minimum of harsh weather and the attraction of the ocean beaches....all contribute to Wilmington's appeal to visitors as well as to those desiring an ideal spot for retirement.  The park is easily accessible...with travel from all directions through interesting country with historical background.  Travelers can reach Wilmington from Norfolk, 254 miles; Richmond, 251 miles; Fayetteville, 92 miles; Charlotte, 203 miles; Raleigh, 123 miles and Charleston, 167 miles.
